Dartmouth Academic Calendar 2023-2024: Important Dates

The Dartmouth academic calendar has registration dates, add/drop dates, holiday schedules, other important dates, and deadlines. Dartmouth College is on a quarter system. Quarter systems are typically around 10 weeks long. 

The Dartmouth academic calendar consists of four ten-week academic quarters per year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. 

There are 15 academic quarters, or terms, between matriculation and graduation; most students will take classes during 12 terms to earn their degrees. 

Dartmouth College Students must take classes on campus for the fall, winter, and spring quarters of their first year, for two of the three academic quarters of their final year, and for a summer quarter of their choice. 

Dartmouth academic calendar fall term 2023

Check out the important dates and deadlines on the Dartmouth academic calendar for the fall term of 2023.  

1. Dartmouth move in day for fall 2023 is from Wednesday, August 30, 2023 to Saturday, September 9, 2023. Residence halls are open for first-year students participating in First-Year Trips on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Residence halls open for first-year students NOT participating in First-Year Trips on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Returning students’ move-in day is on Saturday, September 9, 2023.
2. The First-Year advising day is September 8, 2023.
3. Dartmouth Fall term online check-in is from September 10, 2023 to September 13, 2023.
4. Dartmouth Fall 2023 classes start on September 11, 2023. It is the first day of classes for 2023.
5. The first week of the fall term schedule adjustment (add/drop) is from September 11, 2023 to September 17, 2023. Permission to add courses is not necessary unless normally required.
6. September 13, 2023 is the deadline to complete check-in without a $50 late registration fee – check-in must be completed by 11:59 p.m.
7. The deadline for prospective fall term graduates in residence to elect or change a major or minor is September 17, 2023.
8. The second week of fall term schedule adjustment (add/drop) is September 18, 2023 to September 24, 2023. All courses require instructor permission to add, according to the Dartmouth academic calendar 2023-2024.
9. September 20, 2023 is the final day for delayed check-in (with a $50 late fee). Any student not checked in by the end of this day, but still listed with the enrollment pattern letter R (residence) for the fall term is liable for administrative withdrawal.
10. September 24, 2023 is the final day for each undergraduate to establish an official and final two-, three-, or four-course load. Any registered student not officially enrolled in at least two courses becomes liable for administrative withdrawal.
11. The final day for electing the use of the Non-Recording Option (NRO) is September 25, 2023.
12. The date for submission of degree applications by prospective fall term graduates is October 23, 2023.
13. October 23, 2023 is the final day for dropping the fourth course without a grade notation of “W.” If dropping the fourth course after this date, one of four eligibilities for a fourth course is exhausted by such action.
14. October 31, 2023 is the final day to withdraw from a course; any later request to withdraw from a course requires a petition to a special committee.
15. The final day to alter the grade limit filed under the Non-Recording Option (NRO) is November 7, 2023.
16. The last day in term for holding a major test or examination is November 7, 2023, according to the Dartmouth academic calendar 2023-2024.
17. Fall term classes end on November 14, 2023.
18. Dartmouth Pre-Examination break is from November 15, 2023 to November 16, 2023.
19. Fall 2023 Final examinations begin on November 17, 2023 to November 22, 2023.
20. Final examinations are suspended on November 18, 2023.
21. Scheduled final examinations end on November 21, 2023.
22. The unscheduled final examination day is November 22, 2023.
23. Final grades and official transcripts are available on December 5, 2023.

Dartmouth academic calendar winter term 2024

Check out the important dates and deadlines on the Dartmouth academic calendar for winter term 2024.  

1. Online check-in for the Winter term takes place from January 2 to January 5, 2024.
2. Dartmouth Winter Term 2024 classes start on January 3, 2024.
3. The first week of the Winter term allows for schedule adjustment (add/drop) from January 3 to January 9, 2024, with no need for permission to add courses unless normally required.
4. The deadline to complete check-in without incurring a $50 late registration fee is January 5, 2024.
5. Winter term prospective graduates in residence have until January 9, 2024, to elect or change a major or minor, according to Dartmouth academic calendar 2023-2024.
6. The second week of Winter term schedule adjustment (add/drop), where all courses require instructor permission to add, takes place from January 10 to January 16, 2024.
7. The final day for delayed check-in (with a $50 late fee) is January 12, 2024. Any student not checked in by the end of this day but still listed with the enrollment pattern letter R (residence) for the Winter term is liable for administrative withdrawal.
8. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is January 15, 2024. Courses regularly held in specific sequences are moved to their x-periods, and other adjustments are made as necessary.
9. January 16, 2024, is the final day for each undergraduate to establish an official and final two-, three-, or four-course load. Any registered student not officially enrolled in at least two courses becomes liable for administrative withdrawal.
10. The final day for electing the use of the Non-Recording Option (NRO) is January 17, 2024.
11. The Course Timetable for the Spring term becomes available on February 2, 2024.
12. February 2, 2024, is also the last day to submit a petition to change the enrollment pattern (D-Plan) to an “R” for the Spring term with a guaranteed response before the end of the Winter course election.
13. The final day for dropping a fourth course without a grade notation of “W” is February 13, 2024.
14. February 14, 2024, is the date for the submission of degree applications by prospective Winter and Spring graduates, according to Dartmouth academic calendar 2023-2024.
15. The final day to withdraw from a course is February 20, 2024. Any later request to withdraw from a course requires a petition to a special committee.
16. The final day to alter the grade limit filed under the Non-Recording Option (NRO) is February 27, 2024.
17. February 27, 2024, is also the last day in the term for holding a major test or examination, as well as the final day to submit a petition to change the enrollment pattern (D-Plan) for the Spring term and the deadline to file completed transfer term applications for the Spring term.
18. Winter term classes end on March 5, 2024.
19. The Winter 2024 Pre-Examination break occurs on March 6-7, 2024.
20. Winter Final examinations begin on March 8, 2024, and end on March 12, 2024.
21. March 12, 2024, is designated as an unscheduled final examination day.
22. Winter 2024 Final grades and official transcripts become available on March 22, 2024.

Dartmouth academic calendar spring term 2024

Check out the important dates and deadlines on the Dartmouth academic calendar for spring term 2024.  

1. The spring 2024 term course election period is from February 7 to February 15, 2024.
2. The final day of the Spring term course election period is February 15, 2024.
3. The Spring term course change period occurs from February 23 to March 5, 2024.
4. Prior to the start of Spring term classes, the final day for making changes in Spring term course elections is March 5, 2024.
5. Dartmouth Spring Break 2024 is from March 13, 2024, to March 24, 2024. Dartmouth University Spring Breaks are usually between the end of the winter term and the beginning of the spring term.
6. Online check-in for the Spring term occurs from March 24 to March 27, 2024.
7. Spring 2024 term classes start on March 25, 2024.
8. The first week of the Spring term allows for schedule adjustment (add/drop) from March 25 to March 31, 2024, with no need for permission to add courses unless normally required.
9. The deadline to complete check-in without incurring a $50 late registration fee is March 27, 2024.
10. Prospective June graduates who were not in residence during the winter term must return their degree applications by April 1, 2024.
11. Spring term prospective graduates in residence have until April 1, 2024, to elect or change a major or minor.
12. The second week of Spring term schedule adjustment (add/drop), where all courses require instructor permission to add, takes place from April 1 to April 7, 2024.
13. The final day for delayed check-in (with a $50 late fee) is April 3, 2024. Any student not checked in by the end of this day but still listed with the enrollment pattern letter R (residence) for the Spring term is liable for administrative withdrawal.
14. April 4, 2024, marks the final day for sophomores to declare a major and, if appropriate, revise enrollment patterns, according to Dartmouth academic calendar 2023-2024.
15. April 7, 2024, is the final day for each undergraduate to establish an official and final two-, three-, or four-course load. Any registered student not officially enrolled in at least two courses becomes liable for administrative withdrawal.
16. The final day for electing the use of the Non-Recording Option (NRO) is April 8, 2024.
17. First-year students must submit enrollment patterns (D-Plan) by April 11, 2024.
18. The Course Timetable for the Fall term is available on May 3, 2024, according to the Dartmouth academic calendar 2024-2025.
19. May 3, 2024, is the last day to submit a petition to change the enrollment pattern (D-Plan) to an “R” for the Fall term with a guaranteed response before the end of the Winter course election.
20. The final day for dropping a fourth course without a grade notation of “W” is May 6, 2024.
21. The Fall 2024 term course election period is from May 8 to May 16, 2024.
22. The final day to withdraw from a course is May 15, 2024. Any later request to withdraw from a course requires a petition to a special committee, according to Dartmouth academic calendar 2023-2024.
23. The final day to alter the grade limit filed under the Non-Recording Option (NRO) is May 22, 2024.
24. The Fall term course change period occurs from May 24 to May 29, 2024.
25. Memorial Day Holiday is observed on May 27, 2024, with no classes held.
26. Spring term classes end on May 29, 2024.
27. A Pre-Examination break occurs on May 30, 2024.
28. Spring 2024 Final examinations begin on May 31, 2024, and end on June 4, 2024.
29. June 4, 2024, is designated as an unscheduled final examination day.
30. Dartmouth Class Day 2024 is celebrated on June 8, 2024.
31. Dartmouth graduation 2024 and Commencement take place on June 9, 2024.
32. Spring 2024 Final grades and official transcripts become available on June 14, 2024.
