GWU Academic Calendar 2023-2024: Important Dates

The GWU academic calendar consists of exam schedules, class schedules, fall break, spring break, thanksgiving break, other important dates, and deadlines.

George Washington University is on a semester system. GW’s semesters are 14 weeks of instruction time plus a 15th week reserved for exams.

Courses that do not schedule a final exam nor have a final paper or project due during exam week must make up the instruction time during the 14 weeks of classes.

GWU Students are required to take 12 credits per semester (full-time enrollment). Some academic programs may require more than 12 credits each semester based on the progression of the curriculum.

GWU’s Make-Up Day is a day held to allow George Washington University and/or an individual faculty member to offer a make-up class for any unanticipated class cancellations or disruptions related to weather, emergencies, or a change to the class schedule.

1. GWU move in fall 2023 (Residence Hall Opening Week) is from Wednesday, August 16, 2023 to Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Move in dates for First-Year Students participating in Pre-Orientation Programs is from Wednesday, August 16, 2023 to Thursday, August 17, 2023. GWU Upperclass Student Arrival is from Sunday, August 20, 2023 to Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Move in date for First-Year Students is from Friday, August 18, 2023 to Saturday, August 19, 2023.
2. GWU fall 2023 classes start on Thursday, August 24, 2023. It is George Washington University’s first day of classes for fall 2023 semester.
3. Labor Day holiday (no classes) is Monday, September 4, 2023 according to the GWU holiday calendar 2023.
4. GWU Law students’ last day of Add/Drop is Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
5. Monday, September 18, 2023 is the last day for Credit/No Credit Option for law students.
6. GWU Fall Break 2023 is from Thursday, October 12, 2023 to Friday, October 13, 2023.
7. GWU Thanksgiving break 2023 is from Monday, November 20, 2023 to Saturday, November 25, 2023. George Washington University’s Thanksgiving break is one week long. Classes resume on Monday, November 27, 2023.
8. The last day of classes for fall 2023 is Monday, December 11, 2023.
9. Reading/Make-Up Day is on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 according to GWU fall 2023 schedule.
10. GWU Fall 2023 Final Examinations is from Wednesday, December 13, 2023 to Tuesday, December 19, 2023.
11. GWU winter break 2023 is from Wednesday, December 20, 2023 to Monday, January 15, 2024. Residence halls are closed for Winter Break from Thursday, December 22, 2023 (5 pm EST) to Saturday, January 14, 2024 (9 am EST).
12. GWU Fall Degree Conferral date is Friday, January 5, 2024.

1. Martin Luther King Day holiday (no classes) is Monday, January 15, 2024 according to the GWU holiday calendar 2024.
2. GWU Spring 2024 classes start on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
3. Inauguration Day (no classes) is in January 2024.
4. President’s Day holiday (no classes) is Monday, February 19, 2024 according to the GWU holiday calendar 2024.
5. GWU Spring Break 2024 is from Monday, March 11, 2024 to Saturday, March 16, 2024. Classes resume on Monday, March 18, 2024.
6. The last day of classes for spring 2024 is Monday, April 29, 2024.
7. Make-Up Day is Tuesday, April 30, 2024 according to GWU spring 2024 schedule.
8. Designated Monday is Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
9. Reading Day is from Thursday, May 2, 2024 to Friday, May 3, 2024.
10. GWU Spring 2024 Final Examinations is from Saturday, May 4, 2024 to Friday, May 10 2024.
11. GWU Commencement Weekend 2024 is from Thursday, May 16, 2024 to Sunday, May 19, 2024.
12. Spring 2024 Degree Conferral date is Sunday, May 19, 2024. It is the date for George Washington University Commencement and Law School Diploma Ceremony.

1. Session I begins for 6-, 8-, 10-, and full-term sessions on Monday, May 20, 2024.
2. Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 27, 2024, with no classes.
3. Juneteenth is observed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, with no classes.
4. The 6-week Session I ends on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
5. Session II begins for the 6-week session on Monday, July 1, 2024.
6. Independence Day is observed on Thursday, July 4, 2024, with no classes.
7. The 8-week Session I ends on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
8. The 10-week Session I ends on Saturday, July 27, 2024.
9. The 6-week Session II ends on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
10. The full-term Session I ends on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
11. Summer Degree Conferral is scheduled for Saturday, August 31, 2024.
