CMU Academic Calendar 2023-2024: Important Dates

The CMU Academic Calendar serves as Carnegie Mellon University’s information source and planning document for students, faculty, staff, and departments, as well as outside organizations. The Carnegie Mellon academic calendar 2023-24 includes registration dates, class start dates, add/drop deadlines, exam dates, and more.

The university follows a semester-based academic calendar, where each academic year is divided into two 15-week semesters, a fall semester and a spring semester.

In addition to the regular fall and spring semesters, CMU also offers a summer session, which is divided into two 6-week sessions and one 12-week session. The university also offers a mini-semester in January, which is a 3-week term known as the “Winter Session.”

The exact dates of the academic calendar may vary slightly from year to year, but generally, the fall semester runs from late August to mid-December, and the spring semester runs from early January to early May. The summer sessions usually run from mid-May to early August, and the Winter Session runs in the first three weeks of January.

CMU Academic Calendar Fall 2023

These are the key dates and deadlines on the CMU Academic Calendar for Fall in the 2023-2024 academic year.

1. CMU First-Year students Orientation is from Sunday, August 20, 2023, to Friday, August 26, 2023.
2. CMU Move-In Day for Incoming First-Year students is Saturday, August 19, 2023. Due to traffic restrictions, CMU students will be required to sign up for a move-in timeslot through the Housing Portal between 9 am and 3:30 pm.
3. CMU Upper-Class Move-In day is from Wednesday, August 23, 2023 through Sunday, August 27, 2023.
4. CMU Fall 2023 classes start on Monday, August 28, 2023. It is the first day of classes for fall semester. Semester & Mini-1 classes begin.
5. Mini-1 add, audit & tuition adjustment drop deadline is Friday, September 1, 2023.
6. Labor Day Holiday is Monday, September 4, 2023. There are no classes on this day.
7. Fall Semester add, audit & tuition adjustment drop deadline is Monday, September 11, 2023.
8. Mini-1 drop deadline is Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Withdrawal grade is assigned after this date according to the CMU academic calendar 2023-2024.
9. Monday, October 2, 2023 is Mini-1 Pass/no pass & withdrawal deadline. Mini-1 Faculty Course Evaluations open on this date.
10. CMU Fall 2023 Semester drop deadline is Monday, October 9 2023. Withdrawal grade is assigned after this date.
11. Mini-1 last day of classes is Friday, October 13, 2023.
12. Friday, October 13 2023 is Mini-1 voucher election deadline on the CMU academic calendar 2023-2023.
13. CMU Family Weekend 2023 is on Friday, October 13, 2023 and Saturday, October 14 2023.
14. Mini-1 Exams is Saturday, October 14, 2023.

28. Makeup final exams is on Monday, December 18, 2023.

20. CMU Spring Carnival 2023 is from Thursday, April 13 2023 to Saturday, April 15 2023. No Classes on this day according to the CMU academic calendar. The Carnegie Mellon’s Spring Carnival is three days of amusement park rides, adventures in booths, unhealthy snacks, and buggy races. 
21. Monday, April 17 2023 is Mini-4 pass/no pass & withdrawal deadline.

23. The last day of classes for Spring 2023 semester is Friday, April 28 2023.
