MSU Academic Calendar 2023-2024: Important Dates

Michigan State University, MSU academic calendar has class schedule, exam schedule, holiday schedule, add/drop dates, fall break, winter break, spring break, other important dates, and deadlines.

Michigan State University uses the semester system. There are usually 3 semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer) in an academic year. There are about 14-15 weeks in each semester at MSU.

Courses at Michigan State University are given on a “semester” basis, and credits earned are semester credits. To convert semester credits to the “quarter” systems, multiply by 3/2. To convert quarter credits to semester credits, multiply by 2/3.

If you have 12 or more credits, you are considered a full-time student at MSU. Freshmen require 0-27 credits, Sophomores require 28-55 credits, Juniors require 56-87, and Seniors require 88+ credits.

All undergraduate baccalaureate programs require a minimum of 120 credits. Most MSU programs are designed so that a student starting a program as a first-year student may finish it in 8 semesters by satisfactorily completing an average of 15 credits a semester.

In practice, students usually carry from 12 to 18 credits a semester depending on personal circumstances and the chosen program of study.

1. Enrollment by Appointment begins on March 13, 2023 to March 22, 2023.
2. MSU Open Enrollment begins for Fall 2023 on March 23, 2023.
3. Initial tuition billing statements for Fall 2023 are available electronically on August 5, 2023.
4. MSU Move-in date for fall 2023 is from August 18, 2023 to August 24, 2023. Incoming international students will move in between Friday, August 18, and Sunday, August 20, 2023. New International Student Orientation programming begins on Monday, August 21, 2023. MSU Incoming students will move in between Tuesday, August 22, and Wednesday, August 23, 2023. New Student Orientation programming begins on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Returning students will move in between Wednesday, August 23, and Thursday, August 24, 2023. University apartment move-in begins on August 1, 2023.
5. Initial minimum tuition and fee payments are due for Fall 2023 on August 25, 2023.

7. MSU fall 2023 classes start on August 28, 2023. It is Michigan State University’s first day of classes for fall 2023.
8. Labor day holiday (Michigan State University is closed) is on Monday, September 4, 2023.
9. The online open add period for Fall ends on September 6, 2023 at 11:59 p.m according to MSU academic calendar 2023-2024.
10. The visitor Change Deadline is September 6, 2023. It is the last day to change to or from Visitor for Fall – must be done in the Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m.
11. Final certification forms for non-Degree Audit programs are delivered to colleges on September 7, 2023.
12. September 22, 2023 is the end of the tuition refund period for Fall semester courses – no refund after this date.
13. According to MSU academic calendar 2023, October 16, 2023 is Michigan State University’s Middle of Fall semester 2023.
14. October 17, 2023 is the last day to change to or from CR/NC for Fall – must be done in the Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m.

1. Tuition billing statements for Spring 2024 are available electronically on December 16, 2023.
2. A late enrollment fee of $100 begins on January 8, 2024, for students who initially enroll on or after the class starting date.
3. The initial minimum tuition and fee payment for Spring 2024 is due on January 8, 2024.
4. MSU Classes for the Spring semester 2024 begin on January 8, 2024.
5. The online open add period for Spring full-term classes ends at 11:59 pm on January 12, 2024.
6. The university is closed for a holiday on January 15, 2024.
7. Classes will not be held on February 13, 2024, although the university remains open. Another day with no classes is February 13, 2024, according to MSU academic calendar 2023-2024.
8. MSU Spring Break 2024 takes place from February 26 to March 1, 2024.
9. The middle of the Spring semester 2024 is on March 4, 2024.
10. Tuition billing statements for Summer 2024 are available electronically on April 20, 2024.
11. Classes for the Spring semester 2024 end on April 21, 2024.
12. Final exams for the Spring semester 2024 are scheduled from April 22 to April 26, 2024.
