Stanford Academic Calendar 2024-2025: Important Dates

Stanford University is on a quarter system. The quarter system is an alternative to the semester and trimester systems at other colleges and universities.

Quarter systems are typically around 10 weeks long. The year is split into 4 academic periods of equal length (about 10 weeks of instruction, including exams). They consist of Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.

Below are important dates and deadlines on the Stanford academic calendar for Autumn Quarter (Fall) 2024.

1. The Textbook Adoption deadline for the Autumn quarter is Tuesday, July 31, 2024.
2. The Stanford Bulletin, detailing the academic year 2024-25 degree requirements and course offerings, is published during the week of Monday, August 12, 2024.
3. Axess opens for course enrollment for M.D. and M.S.P.A. students on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 6 p.m.
4. Axess also opens for course enrollment for J.D., J.S.M., L.L.M., and J.S.D. students on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 6 p.m.
5. The first and second-year M.D. and M.S.P.A. students commence their instruction on Monday, August 26, 2024, per the School of Medicine academic calendar.

9. Independence Day is observed on July 4, 2024, as a holiday with no classes.
10. On July 5, 2024, at 5 p.m., the Final Study List deadline is set. It is the final day to add or drop a class, adjust units on a variable-unit course, and the last day for tuition reassessment for dropped courses or units. Students may withdraw from a course until the Course Withdrawal deadline, and a ‘W’ notation will appear on the transcript.
11. The Term withdrawal deadline is on July 26, 2024, at 5 p.m. It is the last day to submit a Leave of Absence to withdraw from the University with a partial refund.
12. The Change of grading basis deadline is on August 2, 2024, at 5 p.m.
13. The Course withdrawal deadline is on August 2, 2024, at 5 p.m.
