uOttawa Important Dates 2023-2024: Key Dates and Deadlines

The following uOttawa important dates and deadlines apply to the entire student population, whether you are studying at the undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral level.

The University of Ottawa operates on a semester system. The academic year is divided into two semesters: the Fall semester and the Winter semester. The Fall semester typically runs from September to December, while the Winter semester runs from January to April.

There is also a Spring-Summer semester, which runs from May to August, but it is less common for undergraduate students to take courses during this time.

Dates may vary for certain programs (Education, Common Law, Civil Law, Engineering, Medicine, MBA, Master of Health Administration (MHA), Health Sciences, etc.) and for work terms.

uOttawa important dates fall 2023

The University of Ottawa fall 2023 term starts from September 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023. Classes start on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, and end on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. uOttawa has 91 days of instruction for the fall 2023 semester.

  1. The first day of enrollment for regular undergraduate students is May 23, 2023, starting at 8 a.m for the first year and newly-admitted students coming from CÉGEP or college.
  2. The first day of enrollment for regular undergraduate fourth-year students is May 30, 2023, starting at 8 a.m. Having successfully completed at least 81 units.
  3. The first day of enrollment for regular undergraduate third-year students is June 6, 2023, starting at 8 a.m. Having successfully completed at least 54 units.
  4. The first day of enrollment for regular undergraduate second-year students is June 13, 2023, starting at 8 a.m. (having successfully completed at least 24 units).
  5. The first day to enroll for graduate students is June 20, 2023, starting at 8 a.m.
  6. The first day to enroll for Common Law and second, third-year Civil Law students is June 20, 2023, starting at 10 a.m. Civil Law students must have successfully completed at least 24 units.
  7. The first day of enrollment for the Faculty of Education is June 22, 2023, starting at 8 a.m.
  8. The period of opting out of health and dental insurance (graduate students) is from August 1, 2023 to October 1, 2023.
  9. The first day to enroll for special students transferring units (credits) and uOttawa-Carleton exchange students is August 15, 2023, starting at 9 a.m.
  10. The first day to enroll as special students for undergraduate students and graduate students is August 22, 2023, one minute past midnight. For graduate students, please contact the relevant academic unit for more information on enrolment procedures.
  11. uOttawa fall term 2023 starts on September 1, 2023.
  12. Labour Day holiday is September 4, 2023.
  13. The Starting Point (mandatory activities in academic units) to welcome all students is on September 5, 2023.
  14. The period of opting out of health and dental insurance for regular undergraduate students is from September 6, 2023, to September 30, 2023.
  15. uOttawa fall classes start on September 6, 2023. It is the first day of classes for the University of Ottawa students for fall 2023.
  16. The last day to register for a degree for Fall 2023 Convocation is September 15, 2023.
  17. The last day to enroll and to change course selection is September 19, 2023.
  18. The last day to change student status (regular/auditor) is September 19, 2023.
  19. The last day to request a leave of absence (graduate studies) is September 29, 2023.
  20. September 29, 2023, is the last day to withdraw from a course or an activity and receive financial credit (less administrative fees).
  21. The last day to pay tuition fees without late fees is September 29, 2023. Consult the fee payment section of the Financial Resources website.
  22. September 29, 2023 is the last day to receive a full refund on your U-Pass. After this date, reimbursements are pro-rated.
  23. The uOttawa Thanksgiving holiday is October 9, 2023.
  24. Fall 2023 exam schedule is posted in uOttawa uoZone on October 19, 2023.
  25. November 17, 2023, is the last day to withdraw from a course or an activity (no financial credit).
  26. The last day for eligible French immersion students to identify their courses to be evaluated with “Satisfactory/Not satisfactory” grades is November 17, 2023.
  27. Fall classes end on December 6, 2023.
  28. Study break is December 7, 2023. There is no study break for students in the MD Program.
  29. Exam period is from December 8, 2023 to December 21, 2023. Exams are scheduled during the week and on the weekend, both during the day and in the evening.
  30. uOttawa Chrismas Holiday break is from 5 p.m. on December 22, 2023, to 8:45 a.m. on January 3, 2024.
  31. Official final grades for the Fall term are posted on January 17, 2024.
  32. Official academic standings are posted on January 24, 2024.
  33. The last day to submit a request for a grade review for a final exam is January 31, 2024. For information on grade reviews and appeals, please consult the appropriate academic regulations.
  34. February 18, 2024 to February 24, 2024 is the deferred exam period for faculties of Arts, Civil Law, Engineering, Science, Social Sciences and at the Telfer School of Management. Contact your faculty for exam dates.
  35. February 18, 2024 to February 24, 2024 is the deferred and supplemental exam period for 1000-level anatomy (ANP) courses.

uOttawa Reading week 2024

uOttawa Reading week 2024 is from Sunday, February 18, 2024, to Saturday, February 24, 2024. The University of Ottawa reading week is one week long. Classes resume on Monday, February 26, 2024, after the reading week break for fall 2024.

There are no classes in programs at the faculties of Arts, Law, Engineering, Medicine (except for the M.D. program), Health Sciences, Science and Social Sciences and at the Telfer School of Management.

Some exceptions may apply at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. CO-OP work terms and clinical and non-clinical placements are not affected.

  1. The university is closed for the holiday break from 5 p.m. December 22, 2023, to 8:45 a.m. January 3, 2024.
  2. February 19, 2024, is when Family Day is observed.
  3. The last day to receive a full refund on your U-Pass and the last day to pay tuition fees without late fees is February 2, 2024.
  4. UOttawa reading week 2024 takes place from February 18 to 24, 2024.
  5. The exam schedule will be posted in uoZone on February 16, 2024.
  6. Makeup classes for Good Friday will be held on April 9, 2024.
  7. Makeup classes for Easter Monday are scheduled for April 10, 2024.
  8. The winter term exam period is from April 12 to 25, 2024.
  9. The study break (except in the MD Program) is on April 11, 2024.
  10. Various student groups have their first day to enroll, starting from May 23, 2023.
  11. January 19, 2024, is the last day to enroll and to change course selection.
  12. The last day to withdraw from a course or an activity and receive a financial credit is February 2, 2024.
  13. March 22, 2024, is the last day to withdraw from a course or an activity (no financial credit).
  14. May 13, 2024, is when the official final grades for the Winter term are posted.
  15. The last day to submit a request for a grade review for a final exam is May 28, 2024.
  16. May 23, 2024, is when the official academic standings will be posted.
  17. The deferred and supplemental exam periods for specific courses are from June 3 to 12, 2024, and July 7 to 13, 2024.
