MIT Academic Calendar 2023-2024: Important Dates and Deadlines

MIT operates on a 4–1–4 academic calendar with the fall semester beginning after Labor Day and ending in mid-December, a 4-week “Independent Activities Period” in the month of January, and the spring semester commencing in early February and ceasing in late May.

1. MIT Pre-registration for the fall term and summer session begins on Monday, May 1, 2023.
2. The deadline for doctoral students to submit applications, signed by advisor and department, to the Office of Graduate Education, for fall term non-resident status is Thursday, June 15, 2023.
3. MIT Fall 2023 pre-registration deadline is Thursday, June 22, 2023. Continuing students must initiate pre-registration by this date ($85 late fee after August 24, 2023). Check out MIT Atlas.
4. The deadline for continuing students to select preferences for fall CI-H/CI-HW subjects is Thursday, June 22, 2023.
5. Labor Day holiday is Monday, September 4, 2023.
6. Registration Day for the fall term is Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
7. MIT fall 2023 classes start on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. It is the first day of classes.
8. MIT Student holiday is on Friday, September 22, 2023.
9. Indigenous Peoples Day holiday is on Monday, October 9, 2023, and Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
10. Veterans Day holiday is on Friday, November 10, 2023.
11. MIT Thanksgiving break 2023 is from Thursday, November 23, 2023, to Friday, November 24, 2023.
12. The last day of classes is Wednesday, December 13, 2023.
13. Fall 2023 final exams are from Monday, December 18, 2023, to Friday, December 22, 2023.
14. MIT Winter break 2023 is from Saturday, December 23, 2023, to Sunday, February 4, 2024.
15. Fall 2023 Grades for subjects with final exams are due on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

MIT academic calendar spring 2024

1. The Independent Activities Period (IAP) begins on Monday, January 8, 2024, with the first day of classes for Physical Education & Wellness.
2. The spring 2024 pre-registration deadline is Monday, January 8, 2024; continuing students must initiate pre-registration by 5 PM on this date ($85 late fee after January 18).
3. Term summaries of fall term grades are available to departments on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
4. The thesis due date for February doctoral degrees is Friday, January 12, 2024, and it’s the last day to petition for the January Advanced Standing Exam.
5. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on Monday, January 15, 2024.
6. Registration for the spring 2024 term begins on Monday, January 29, 2024.
7. The registration week for the spring 2024 term starts on Monday, January 29, 2024, and ends on Friday, February 2, 2024.
8. MIT Spring 2024 classes start on Monday, February 5, 2024. It is the first day of classes for the spring term.
9. The deadline for registration for all students is Friday, February 9, 2024, with a $50 late fee after this date.
10. Third quarter Physical Education & Wellness classes begin on Monday, February 12, 2024.
11. Presidents’ Day is observed on Monday, February 19, 2024.
12. Undergraduate registration for fourth quarter Physical Education & Wellness classes opens on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.
13. Half-term subjects (H3) final exam period occurs from Monday, March 18, 2024, to Friday, March 22, 2024.
14. MIT Spring break 2024 begins on Monday, March 25, 2024, and ends on Friday, March 29, 2024.
15. The first day of classes for half-term subjects offered in the second half of the term (H4) is on Monday, April 1, 2024.
16. Fourth quarter Physical Education & Wellness classes begin on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.
17. MIT Campus Preview Weekend starts on Thursday, April 11, 2024.
18. Patriots’ Day is observed on Monday, April 15, 2024.
19. Drop Date is on Wednesday, April 23, 2024.
20. Pre-registration for the fall 2024 term and summer session begins on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, according to MIT academic calendar 2024-2025.
21. The thesis is due for June doctoral degrees on Friday, May 3, 2024.
22. No tests or assignments may be given after Friday, May 10, 2024, for subjects with final exams.
23. Friday, May 17, 2024, is the last day to go off the May degree list.
24. The final exam period takes place from Friday, May 17, 2024, to Friday, May 24, 2024.
25. MIT Graduation 2024 and Commencement activities are from Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to Thursday, May 30, 2024. MIT 2024 degree award date is on Thursday, May 30, 2024. MIT Commencement activities continue on Friday, May 31, 2024.
